The wicker surface would, I suspect, act like a whole lot of small cleats to stop any sliding, and in that respect might be more effective than the cleats I added to the bottom of my fitings.

If one were to stand still in wicker splatchers they would presumably sink slowly under the wearer's weight, with the mud oozing up between the interstices of the wickerwork. But that could be negated by not standing still, or even just walking in them, but by runnning in them -- which of course is just what the Mastodon did do.
