I keep coming across things that I wish that I had done during my UK visit in 2000. The latest one is to have examined the mud of Suffolk and Essex [from the professional view of one who has worked with soils a fair bit]. If the mud has a silt component, then wickerwork would bridge over the soil, and very little would be squeezed through. On the other hand, if it is smoothly gelatinous like mousse, [ie, all clay] then it would in fact squeeze up between the wickers. The prescence of the holes between the wickers would allow air to go though the splatcher when it is being lifted up, allowing it to release that much easier. I'll have to ask some of the correspondents local to that area to do some field research for the benefit of Tarboarders.
