I think the style of architecture of the house should also be excepted - it is a classic 'moneymaker's pile' and is appalling.
Absolutely Peter. The "PH" house, outbuildings and surviving boathouse would look fine on the Thames somewhere near Henley. I confess that I find that Hobbs's writing sometimes rushes away with him. I have a similar trait amd you have, quite rightly, pulled me up about this on more than one occassion.
I am willing to be persuaded that AR 'borrowed' these as an ingredient for his 'Beckfoot'.
We have a HHH (Honorary Hobbsian Hypothesis) membership card waiting for you. It was this bit of evidence from Iain which was a clincher for me.
AR has Roger and Titty seeing tents on the Beckfoot lawn and a pirate flag being flown from an improvised flagpole.
Now it would be interesting to see some research regarding the actual houses or houses that gave AR the basis of the fictional 'Beckfoot' building.
