Thanks for all those searches, Ed. I'm pleased they confirmed my suspicions! I always think the naming of the D's comes from the picture-letter in answer to Nancy in WH, when they are both signalling the letter D. So when they met up with everyone in CC and told them about their adventures on the lake in the north, they would have also told them about being called the D's. Maybe there is simply no occasion in CC where they are required to be named as such; the first occasion being the early BS reference.

Not sure about the correct apostrophe usage - what does the great Lynne Truss say on this matter?
