I'd like to think the discussion about last year was to flesh out what had already been described in many letters.
But what was the letter-writing convention at 1930's boarding schools? In books like Malory Towers and Jennings (sorry, but these are the only boarding school books I've read!), the children had to write to their parents once a week. No other letter-writing was compulsory. So maybe the avid writers (Dorothea and Titty) wrote more letters, but the ones doing the bare minimum (everyone else) didn't bother. In that case there would have been a great exchanging of news when they all next met up.
