Google Earth is amazing. I am lucky enough to live in a high-resolution area, I can see great detail - e.g. which toys my kids had left lying in the back garden when the satellite took its photo. That actual image is now about 5 years old.

I've heard (might be an urban myth though) that the military satellites can gather really detailed images. Stories like being able to read a newspaper headline from 100 miles high?
