The link goes to some traditional Canadian snowshoes. I have used modern variants of this. They are quite easy to walk in, the snow comes up through the leather lacing but you don't sink in too far. I have also linked a picture of a selection of snowshoe styles that are available these days, some are high tech, some are traditional styles.
