Thinking about it and the examples that The Professor used, perhaps my assumption of French origin for the naming of such lakes as Lake Tracy isn't entirely correct. I will offer a second idea, perhaps it also comes from the Celtic way of naming; look at such Scottish and Irish lakes, Loch Lomond, Loch Fyne, Lough Neagh or Lough Corrib. The convention also tends to be used for the larger lakes of the world.
