Whilst I was not around in the 30s. I do remember huddling around a coal fire in the 40s and later, and being toasted in the front and having an icy blast on my back from the draft it produced drawing in the cold air from outside.

Those were the days?

As to Peter H's questions we could have a whole thread to each one.
Needs some thought.
