In reply to Gordon Pole's query, the Lake District has the advantage over Galloway of being a National Park, within which the planting of new forests is very strictly controlled (effectively prohibited). Even the pre-Park plantations have changed considerably from when I was growing up there in the 50s and 60s. They used to be barricaded off, but now most are open for hiking, picnicking etc. Even so, the hill sheep farmers could not keep going without substantial subsidies -- one of the few good things to come out of the EC's Common Agricultural Policy! There was an interesting article in the latest newsletter of the Friends of the Lake District about a Langdale hill farmer.
