That is my understanding of "vanilla" as a colloquial term - unchanged or unmodified. It might imply "boring" but doesn't have to. I have no idea why "vanilla" came to mean this, but it could be that vanilla ice cream is so often used as the basis for adornment in sundaes, shakes, baked alaska, and other ice cream offerings.
