It did have serious origins - an attempt to represent all genders, races etc. In the past much academic writing and research the white male hetrosexual view of the world dominated. But as usual when there is an attempt to try and shift the balance it ends up being taken to the other extreme, usually by people who don't really know what they are talking about.
'PC' has caused some things have been changed for the good - red Indians, in my childhood they were the people fought cowboys. Away from childhood they are of course the original peoples of what is now the USA and they were neither red or Indian, so the term 'native american' has become widely accepted.
My complaint that the term is horrible is because of its miss-use by the lower middle-class tabloid press when they imagine some injustice has been done (reference to the EU is the same, if anything aspect of the English (and I do mean English) way of life changes then the EU is always to blame). Like most of those kind or arguments and debates they are usually carried on the most loudly and vociferously by those who are woefully ignorant of the facts!
