Hello Sam, I'm a bit surprised that anyone's looking this far down the board now! I did myself wonder about hob-nails but if you have a chance to see some North-Country Clog Morris Dancers sometime, if they've got irons on their clogs (or rather, under their clogs!) rather than rubber soles, I think you would recognise Dorothea's comment "Not unless they're walking on skates...". Also, if you look at the illustration of Jacky in the Dog's Home doorway, "Not looking at all like going" his footware appears to curl up slightly at the toes which is characteristic of the shaping of the rigid wooden sole of English North Country clogs.
