I agree - the only bitterness seems to be from those defending it. By all means keep whatever festivals you like as they make life more enjoyable but, don't pretend there is anything other than social rituals and dogmas involved. Nothing wrong with them either as long as they're not inflicted on others as the only 'right' thing to do.
I keep Christmas - partly because of childhood influence, partly because of my own children and partly because its one day in the year to connect with loved ones in a special way. Am I religious/spiritual - no. Do I like the aura and magic, the carols and the 'specialness' of the day - yes.
