Whatever Ransome's views on religion, I doubt they had anything to do with naming his masterpiece. Christmas just wasn't relevant to the plot, except as providing Nancy with a knife containing a file. Winter, on the other hand, gives us the igloo and sledging and skating and cragfast sheep and ice boats and the whole concept of an Arctic Expedition. Can you tell I love this book?
