Prue,
Forgive me for this gentle reproof. I'm not quite clear exactly what you mean by "don't pretend there is anything other than social rituals and dogmas involved." Although I can't speak for him, I don't think Peter understands you either. If you mean people shouldn't pretend they believe in the actual birth of Christ when they don't, let me assure you, in my case there is no pretence whatsoever. No pretence in any of my friends, either. But if you mean people shouldn't pretend to a false belief simply to enjoy the benefits of Christmas, I agree with you. In such a multi-ethnic diverse city as Vancoucver, many people of other religions at Yuletide throw themselves into an orgy of gift-buying and giving, while having virtually no idea what it is they are celebrating. It seems to me that the people who decorate their houses with the brightest and most numerous lights possess the least amount of Christianity at this or any other season. I don't like the commercial aspects of Christmas for many reasons, some of which are the syrupy carols playing in the shopping malls, the injunctions to spend, spend and spend again, the false heartiness of the department store Santas, the phony reindeer antlers household pets are forced to wear as well as the Santa Claus hats salespeople wear at this season. What has all this got to do with a baby born into poverty in a stable 2000 years ago? This is the baby who grew up to remind the world that wealth and possessions will never get you into heaven. He also made it quite clear that he hated hyrocrisy. And what hypocrisy it is to use the anniversary of Christ's birth as an excuse to get drunk and go into debt buying gifts for people who don't need them. The only Christmas spirit I see are the Salvation Army Santas collecting donations to make the life of homeless people a little less horrible. If this is what you're getting at, Prue, then I agree with you 100 percent.
Cheers,

John
