Fiona - I also think Jemmerling was based on someone real, but this is just a personal gut feeling rather than being evidence-based! You're right, he is drawn with a clear face. I haven't got GN here with me to check, but isn't there a picture of the Indianing sailor with a clear face too? Maybe by the time of illustrating GN, AR was more confident about drawing faces?
