In fact I am having trouble thinking of any well-known 20th century books apart from the Narnia books (and they aren't conventionally religious) in which God, religion or church are a significant part ofthe background. I am not referring to clergy as background characters like the parson in The Big Six but children going to church, praying etc.

L.M. Boston's The Children of Green Knowe perhaps.
