In my Puffin paperback edition, published in 1970 and reprinted a number of times until I bought it in 1981, the offending word has been replaced by "Negroes".
Personally, I editorialise when I am reading to my children, 10, 7 & 5, and I come across words or phrases or situations that I feel are inappropriate to today's sensibilities. Its quite simple to say that this is what people used to say or do but is not polite to say that anymore. If under age children are listening, then I'd probably change the words myself. However, like the other respondents I don't think that the original words should be excised and I'm glad that they have been put back in more modern versions..
