In fact I am having trouble thinking of any well-known 20th century books apart from the Narnia books (and they aren't conventionally religious) in which God, religion or church are a significant part ofthe background.

How about 'His Dark Materials'? It's not the conventional approach of course- in fact the trilogy is a pretty flat-out attack on church and organised religion. But it is serious and it is written for older children, and it has sold widely so I imagine that it has struck some kind of chord in the imagination- much as AR's books did.

Or perhaps it doesn't count as 20th century?
