Interesting that W E Johns the creator of Biggles (and a WWI Lieutenant not a Captain!) had the same problem as AR with his first wife, who (like AR) was the mother of his only child. She never agreed to a divorce, so his second de facto wife simply used his surname (Johns). But AR’s wife eventually agreed to a divorce.
