In fact I am having trouble thinking of any well-known 20th century books apart from the Narnia books (and they aren't conventionally religious) in which God, religion or church are a significant part ofthe background.

Written in the 20th century but about the 19th - the "Little House On The Prairie" books contain quite a lot of religious references. I haven't read these books for about 30 years, but seem to recall that the family are devout churchgoers and always say their prayers.
