I like the story; the plot is clever and there is a lot of quiet humour in the book, but if I were running a children's bookshop in, say, Hong Kong or Singapore, I might not stock it.

I would rather like to know if AR ever sent Soong Ching-Ling a copy?

His despatches from Shanghai make his own position perfectly clear. But we must remember that, when it was written, "Missee Lee" was
somewhere to the Left of the orthodoxy prevailing amongst "Shanghailanders"; absent that long-forgotten "expat" milieu, the book seems strange.
