Lurking implies something dodgy - skulking in the shadows and not wanting to be seen. Which is, of course, the AR usage of the term - whenever anyone lurked or was urged to lurk, they most definitely didn't want to be spotted by the enemy.

There are usually no ulterior motives when people lurk on a website or message board, they are just interested spectators.
