The WH boots definitely look like modern-day hiking boots. But the S,A,D's all owned gumboots too (modern-day wellingtons), so might they have worn them in deep, soft snow?

I don't understand Roger's reference to the screw set. I thought the skate was of a fixed length and attached by straps to the boot - where does the screw come in?

I use dubbin for waterproofing hiking boots. Goose fat is far too delicious to be wasted on waterproofing!
