Thank you, Jenny, but it was rather easy. I work in merchant shipping, mess about in boats when not working, and have at different times held posts in Hong Kong, Beijing and Manila (where I met my wife!) The company that I worked for in Hong Kong was one of the main UK shipping companies on the China Coast at the date when "Missee Lee" is set and their ships were regularly pirated. I knew people who remembered such events. Come to think of it, we had three ships pirated in my time, fifty years later, but that was off Indonesia, not China.
