Many many years ago, I learnt in group therapy that one of the most aggressive things you can do in a group of people busy conversing is sit there absolutely silently the whole time.

Perhaps in a group where everyone is visible or otherwise connected, but not in this pub where we not only can't see our neighbours but can't touch or smell or in some other way detect their presence unless they choose to make it known. How do you "know" there is anyone out there lurking unless they choose to make themselves known and then they aren't lurking any more. Besides, you can make a comment, walk out of the bar and go home for supper before I arrive for my lunchtime pint and reply to you.

I choose to remain silent on one email list that I belong too because I am interested in the topic but do not like the attitudes of some of the participants and don't want to get drawn into some of the flame wars that erupt.
