Yet another undesirable effect of Estate Duty. We had many problems in Australia with it, not the least in the agricultural area, where death duties caused farms to be split up, resulting in the children being left with non-viable farms.
Maybe it could be overcome by transferring the assets into some other legal entity such as a company or a charitable trust, so it continues after the death of the originator.
However, I know very little about the UK Inland Revenue ;-)
