I suppose you could call the original Margoletta a weapon of mass destruction (of birds, anyway). Did I really abandon my lurk to utter something so inane?? Back to coddling. Just to the north of Vancouver are a few skiing areas. Although the dangerous parts are clearly marked with signs and a few with ropes, every winter search and rescue have to turn out and rescue a few young men (always young men - not exactly children) who ignore the signs and get lost or injured in the avalanche areas. There is also a river in North Vancouver with steep canyon walls. Usually there is at least one death or serious injury a year from young men leaping from the rocks into the river, despite the warning signs. There is coddling and there is coddling. While I favour giving children the freedom to play tag, etc., I'm also in favour of trying to dissuade people from death and injury. It seems, however, that you can never prevent some people (young men) from trying to prove they can live forever. Ah well, I was a young man myself once.
