My "A.P.", who grew up in the southeastern U.S., recalls her grandparents using the phrase "Teach your grandmother", with a smile. Mom remembers the complete phrase (think eggs) deriving from an older phrase, "teaching a hound to suck eggs". (Never put hounds and chicken together!) Her grandparents are all of Scottish ancestry--perhaps the saying got to the U.S. via the Scotland-Nova Scotia link.
