Peter Ceresole says On a board like this, nobody is forced to join in- it's easy to skip past it. Well, that certainly used to be the case some years ago, in fact at one time it was a TarBoard mantra, but I personally feel that it isn’t so easy now to ‘skip past’ anything. Someone recently said that there was a TarBoard ‘community’, and I think he/she was right.

I think it was me, and I hope it's true. I feel it is. It's one of the great delights of the Net that these communities form. I contribute regularly to a particular Usenet group that deals with Macintosh computers- uk.comp.sys.mac. It may sound geeky and unpromising but it's a wonderfully friendly and civilised place. Discussions cover Macs PLUS PLUS PLUS. Normal traffic is around 250 articles a day, which is easy to handle with decent Usenet software. Being on Usenet and so wide open and unmoderated, it suffers occasionally from vandalism, but the group survives handily. Every year at MacExpo time, about 25 of us gather for a Works Outing, usually to an Ethiopian restaurant. Genuine friendships have formed. A marriage is imminent.

I'm not suggesting that Nancy will wed Timothy on Tarboard, but this is a good place. Although I don't feel any pressure to do so, I do read almost all the messages in greater or lesser detail.

Tarboard for Ever!
