Not at all unusual, though. I have some cousins to whom that happened. Their father was a nice guy, but made a disastrous choice of wife. Each would probably have been okay without the other. They had three children- I've known them since they were babies. They're now middle aged. Two have more or less recovered. One certainly hasn't. All are deeply damaged.

What a mess. And what a shame.

Yes. But just think; if AR had been happily married to Ivy, we probably wouldn't have had his lovely books. Certainly not in the form in which they appeared. In a sense, they are his children with Evgenia. I think that's true, not just a maudlin phrase.
