Ed - think it through. You mention 'the stove' - what stove? No gas, no electricity, right? This a lakeside farmhouse in the early 1930s. So how does Mrs D fry bacon? On the fire, of course. There was probably a 'kitchen range' on which she could bake or roast, but for quick strong heat for frying the open fire was the answer. There may have been a swivelling bracket or trivet on which she could have placed the frying pan, but from my limited experience you usually find that the fire isn't very strong under it, so you hold the pan where the flames are. The bacon would be fresh, unlike today's bacon which is processed and hydrated etc, so it would have cooked quickly. Yum!
