Oops- forgot.
I'd always interpreted "range" as one of those foreign words for "stove," which is the term I grew up with. If you consider stoves and ranges -- and maybe "cookers," another mysterious literary creature -- different entities, what's the dividing line? I would normally classify stoves based on fuel: wood stove, gas stove, electric stove, etc., though for camp stoves one might use a brand name. (Captain Flint's Primus comes to mind.) At minimum, stoves permit cooking on the stove-top, though most have ovens and some add broilers.
