Condensed milk *shudder*

Perhaps you were using the wrong brand, Prue.
In the UK in the early sixties there was :-
Carnation Full Cream condensed milk. This was gorgeous - especially sucked straight from the tin after you had spiked two holes in it. A spiked tin was a good energy provider on a day's treck.
Fussells which I think had a skimmed milk base and, to me, tasted too sweet.
There was also evaporated milk which was unsweetened.
All tinned milks were better drunk straight from the tin without dilution.
Then there was the truly dreadful dried milk. However this is one grocery item where the quality has improved over the years.
