a bit romantic from someone I have always suspected was a Marxist

Does the one exclude the other?

I once interviewed Jean Baptiste Doumeng, the farming cooperative king from Toulouse who was said at one time to handle all the agriculture deals between France and the Soviet Union, and to finance the French communist party. A millionaire (dollar level, not francs), he was basically a completely unpretentious, energetic Catholic peasant, educated into Communism by a local country priest. He said to us "I regard my Communism as an extension of my Christian beliefs."

But no, I have never been a Marxist. Still I reckon that Karl was right about a great many things, including the economic relationships within our society, and that his analysis profoundly affected our political and economic thinking for the better.

But I'd never have advocated collectivising Dixon's sheep.
