I agree with you- thinking of them as written. But they are full of assumed values which do relate to class, wealth, plumbing and all those unavoidable things. Personally, I just get on and enjoy them, but definitely in part as a portrait of their times. It's a pleasant way into thinking about these questions and I think shouldn't be discouraged in any way- particularly as AR was exceptionally good at depicting the society in which many of us (in Britain) still live. Things have changed of course, but not as much as we sometimes like to think. There are other superb fictional depictions of this kind of thing- specifically Anthony Powell's twelve-novel sequence 'The Dance to the Music of Time' which manages accuracy of a similar kind while being profoundly moving and extremely funny. I re-read my favourites from it even more often than I re-read WH and PM (did I just break cover, there?)

And as we've been discussing, there's always PgDn, or Space, or whichever key your system uses to move on. Mine's a Mac, so Cheers! and Space.
