Surely the presence of silver vs. platinum in a gold/(unknown silverish coloured metal) mixture could be distinguished relatively simply. After all, the science of photography was formerly dependent on the photosensitive properties of the salt formed by reacting silver and nitric acid. ("Was formerly" is used in recognition of the new technology of digital photography.)
