We must remember this is the 1930's, Children were all addressed as Miss/Master, they in turn addressed non-relative adults as Sir/Madam orMr, Mrs/Miss, Boys raised their caps on meeting people as did men raise their hats.
Men always walked on the side nearest traffic protecting the lady they were with.
Men and boys always gave up their seats to ladys on transportation.and there are many more things like this that is not practised today.
Growing up in the 40/50s these things were still considered the correct thing to do.
In S&A's the children do not adhere to this behavior though were always polite, possibly AR thought it would make the books too formal.
Those were the days that children should be seen and not heard.
Things have changed for the better in some ways, the worst in others depending on your view.
