My memory's a bit hazy, but weren't Susan and Titty only referred to (at least by Mrs. Dixon) as "Miss Susan" and "Miss Titty" in their absence? IIRC, John wasn't spoken of in his absence, so the point didn't arise; I suspect that had an appropriate situation come up ("Master John let you take the boat by yourselves?") it would have been "Master John". It does occur to me that AR might have avoided such a situation to dodge having to distinguish between John, Master of the good ship Swallow and Master John or Master Roger.
