Years ago (1989?) we stumbled across the Ullswater County Fair while(st) staying in the Lake District. One of the most enjoyable days of our lives. I think Cumbrians compete in nearly anything you can mention (except when they demonstrate their knowledge; the slate-splitting demos were fascinating) and entirely in a friendly fashion. Also saw border collies on trials, a race to the top of the nearest mountain and back, and Cumbrian wrestling.
If "pull your weight" comes from hauling sail, which it might well, then whence "tug-of-war".
