As you surmise (wildly?) it's a dollop of ice cream floating in, in this case root beer, although there is a less interesting variant with Coca Cola. Other flavours must work too, but I've not tried them. Cherryade sounds pretty tempting. The point is, to be truly yucky, the drink has to be fizzy. Yucky is good.
As you stir it in the high glass, vanilla root beer float becomes a kind of wonderful khaki gloop that, as Rob mentioned, tastes a bit like cough medicine although I think of it as being like more tooth paste, but wonderful with it. Conceptually, it's like eating snails- you mun discard your prejudices, lad.
