What causes the large change in level of the lake ?

Probably a combination of torrential rain (looking at the Ferry Cam in the past few nights, at times you could see it fairly hammering down) and wind, which may be backing the water up.

I presume the lake level is controlled by some arrangement of weirs, but with that much rain falling on the fells and the streams pouring it down into the lakes, a couple of feet isn't that great a rise.
