The pronunciation "ZED" was what I was brought up with. (wonderful grammar -- NOT) Probably from the UK influence in Oz from the First Fleet in 1788 to about 1970 or so.
AFAIK the pronunciation "ZEE" is a purely American thing (not sure about the Canadians)
