Yes, it is common in North America, particularly Canada. Maybe that's why it's called the common loon over here. It's even featured on our one dollar coin. Anyone who has not heard it's eerie haunting cry has certainly missed something. This bird is the very soul of the Canadian north. There's nothing like standing on the edge of some remonte lake and hearing that wild call. Sometimes it gives a long wavering scream like a mad woman. It's enough to send shudders down your spine. AR comes pretty close to describing this lonely cry.
