I can quite understand your excitement,Whilst they are common in the North of the US and Canada, I was most surprised to see one down here in Florida early in the year, I was in a Kayak at the time and was able to get quite close.
I rushed to my Bird book to confirm the sighting and found they do come this far south in the winter, no doubt like us all enjoy a bit of warm sun.
I was pleased as when I was a child in England I was always hoping to see one, saw many of the red throated ones but never the GN.
