As a Southern American, I feel no distinction in referring to my parents as DAD, DADDY, POPS, POP, PA - MOM, MOTHER, MA, MAMA. These expressions are quite interchangable, both for my using them, and for my reaction as to when I hear others refer to their parents thusly. On in more formal reference talking ABOUT him, not TO him, I would freely refer to his as my father, as a description of relationship, not as a pseudo-name. Never would I refer to him by the "name" FATHER. I see no "status" implied in the usage of one term over another.

The usage of FATHER as a pseudo-name in ordinary conversation is a distinction reserved for speaking with a Priest, and there is more of a title than a name. As for my own Pastor (Methodist) I am more apt to call him BROTHER than FATHER. But in this area of religion there is an entirely different set of rules.

Not understanding any distinction here, I do not get any distinction from the way Ransome uses these names of affection. Never realized there was supposed to be any differences. Just as soon ignore any such implications.
