I'm not so sure. They are alive and well on the Broads - admittedly only a tiny minority, but CC makes it clear that the Hullabaloos were a tiny minority of motor cruiser hirers at that time as well. A friend of mine was lucky not to lose his boat when rammed by a hire cruiser leaving a pub last summer - they thought it hilarious.

And they were even more common on Windermere before the speed limit was introduced.
