This thread reminds me of one of the Terry Pratchet books. The explorers habit of pointing to somthing and asking a native what is is called had led to some interesting place names on translation. for example:

- Mount It's a Mountain You Bloody Fool
- He Doesn't Know What a River Is? River

On the topic of American Tourists a friend of mine in Edinburgh often related the Urban Myth about the American Yourist who remarked that it was very sensible to build the castle next to the railway station : )
