Well, my query did bring about some degree of response.

Grinding through it all and into the little byways such as The Irish Question and the 6 counties and all that sort of thing I think I have really learnt something which quite surprises me :

It appears that "Britain" (unadorned - not Great, not UK of, not -ish Isles) is the area composed of "Great Britain" and Brittany - how amazing! Perhaps I didn't interpret correctly what I read but ...

(Not of course that someone from Brittany would call themselves British.)
